The club celebrated its 60th anniversary in style with a dinner at the Seebeck rooms on Saturday 15th February.
Over 100 guests were in attendance, including a host of life members, sponsers and representatives of the FTGDCA, as well as players and club officials from all eras.
They were treated to a range of entertaining speeches from key figures in the club’s history, topped off with the naming of the Team of the Decade.
Stewart Finn, the club patron and captain of the 1953/54 premiership side, spoke about the club’s inception and the novel ways of recruiting players in the largely rural district that was Rowville in the 1950’s.
David Long and Ken Hill reminisced of the club throughout the 1970’s whilst Andy ‘Legs’ Artner provided, in typical fashion, a more irreverent look at his time at the club and the characters he played with and against.
Paul Evans spoke about his first impressions of the club and the ups and downs we have experienced over the last decade and a half.
The night culminated in the announcement of the Team of the Decade. Many players were key planks in the 2004/05 and 05/06 First XI premierships, or the young side that almost pinched the 2007/08 flag.
The pride in being named among such elite company was evident on all players named in the team. With several past players travelling from country Victoria and even from interstate to attend, it was a tremendous evening spent reliving past glories and sharing plenty of laughs. Congratulations to the committee members who helped put the night together; we look forward to welcoming you all back for our 70th anniversary dinner in 10 years time!
